Nature of Work
Perform skilled work on a journey level in the application of paints, coatings, and coverings to surfaces. All work is subject to spot-checking and inspection for neatness and efficiency. Functional contacts include co-workers, other service department employees and other University staff and students.
Key Responsibilities
Evaluate area to be painted and determine type of paint to be used, steps and types of surface preparation, equipment needed and any environmental health procedures required.
Prepare area and surface to be painted; move furniture and wall fixtures from painting area, cover floor and furniture for protection, set up and work from ladders, scaffolding, and staging. Preparation may include filling of holes, cracks, joints, and grains, sandblasting, mechanical chipping or grinding, and burning.
Apply paints and coatings with brush, roller, spray, squeegee, or appropriate applicator; may apply wallpaper or fabric. Select pre-mixed materials or prepare materials to match specified colors, textures, consistencies, and drying properties by mixing. Make suggestions regarding paint color, quality, cost and plans and procedures.
Clean area upon completion of painting; return materials and equipment and restore area to original state.
May paint signs, cut stencils, etch surfaces, mark parking lot lines and curbs.
May perform or assist with preparation of cost estimates, material orders, reports and maintenance of records.
Perform other duties as assigned.
